The D38999 Series III connector is the most prevalent military circular connector on the market. It is a circular, high-density screw coupling connector with shell sizes ranging from 9 to 25 with over 50 QPL approved insert arrangements available. It is a high-reliability connector, with a temperature range up to 200°C, high vibration withstanding 44g and 500 mating and unmating cycles. It was designed for civil and military aerospace applications but also used for marine equipment, medical instrumentation, communications equipment, weapons systems, armored carriers and tanks, and test equipment.
A variety of QPL approved shell materials are available, including aluminum, stainless steel, composite (for lightweight requirements), titanium and bronze. Plating options for Aluminum material are cadmium olive drab (W), nickel (F), black zinc nickel for ROHS compliance (Z), green zinc nickel cobalt (ZC). For composite shells, plating options are cadmium olive drab (J) and nickel (M). Options for stainless steel are passivated (K) and nickel (S). Titanium can come without plating (TT) and unplated (TF) and bronze material is unplated.
Shell types options are square flange receptacles, jam nut receptacles and plugs. Contact options include rear release, removable pin or socket contacts with crimp termination (AS39029). Thermocouple contacts are also available, as well as PC tail contacts as a commercial option. It is a high-density connector, with insert arrangement’s accommodating up to 128 pins and sizes ranging for large size 4 to the smallest size 22D. The series is designed to assure proper orientation of the mating halves prior to electrical engagement, and it includes EMI shielding capability. Hermetically sealed options are also available.
D38999 Series III is also in accordance with Boeing specification BACC63 and Airbus EN3645.
